DONNA J. HALL
Donna grew up in Ottawa and followed
her early interest in painting and drawing with art courses in high school. She moved to Toronto in 1971 to attend the Ontario College of Art, but left after a
couple of years. In Toronto she went on to pursue a freelance career in photo
retouching to which she was able to bring her art skills.
When she moved to Vancouver in 1994 she was fortunate to have the time to return to
her painting. A mixed media course with Margaretha Bootsma in 1998
confirmed her direction as she continued to experiment with mixed media and
texture. Donna builds up her paintings using plaster and acrylic, and collage and
imprint found and constructed materials.
Donna sees the landscape as a defining feature of our human character. She
continues to explore the marks left as a result of the elements eroding the
surfaces and depths of our planet. The resulting patterns and textures are
reflected in the archetypical symbols and motifs that appear in prehistoric art
and artifacts. These forms are universal in nature and part of the visual
language we use in defining our cultures, creating our myths, and recreating our
environment.
Donna has lived on Salt spring Island since 2000 and has shown locally and in
group, juried and solo shows in British Columbia.
