John Bateman was born in 1968 in Burlington Ontario . He moved to Nova Scotia in 1977 with his mother, brother and sister. In 1990 Bateman enrolled at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) where he majored in printmaking and sculpture. After three years Bateman suspended his studies to run a recording studio and do graphic design. After five years John felt the need to create three dimensional work again and returned to NSCAD to complete his degree in fine arts.

It was upon his return to the college that John became interested in woodworking. After graduating in 1999, Bateman became employed as an assistant teacher and shop technician at the college. He has taught courses in frame making and box construction. In 2001 John and his wife moved to Salt Spring Island to pursue a career in fine furniture making and decorative box construction.

Bateman’s work is simple and structural with an emphasis on precision. He enjoys combining wood types and primarily uses local cedar and fir. Bateman has participated in several solo and group shows and is represented exclusively by Steffich Fine Art.
