Salt Spring Island artist Ron Crawford creates art with a unique combination of plaster and acrylic paint, resulting in a modern variation on the frescoes. The surfaces are carved, shaped, sanded and painted until they take on a rich, naturally eroded appearance.

"This painting was the first work in which I drilled holes throughout the surface into the board and then painted the plaster behind as well as on the visible surface. The result is that the marks across the surface are uniquely suggestive of forms or traces of creatures coming through the surface. The evening light across the surface adds, I hope, to the mystery of its nature. As a painter working both front and back of a painting has added a sculptural quality to my work which I very much enjoy." - Ron Crawford
