"These 'Marking Time' paintings evolved from a long fascination I have had with how the act of painting takes a time that leaves no trace. The act of painting is frozen at the point I stop at and the time it takes to create is a mystery to anyone but myself. The viewer also can take any amount of time they like with the work, unlike music or theatre, the painting has no beginning or ending but only the moment you are looking.Â
Marking Time is a prison term referring to scratching on a wall the days and weeks of captivity. The studio is a wonderful prison. I use the surface and subtle patterns and colour to slow the viewer's pursuit of the work. The twelve nails set in a clock-like circle become a real or imaginary shadow clock also marking the changing light across the surface as a sundial.Â
We are all living our lives and filling our days with rituals and acts that mark the time or create memories. Paintings are how I make these accented moments for myself. "
