Transforming Shaman
by Abraham Anghik Ruben Stone Sculptor

"I have chosen to be a storyteller for my people through the medium of sculpture. Within these
images, I attempt to evoke a range ofthoughts, feelings, and emotions stirring within the audience;
these same thoughts, feelings, and emotions I have wrought into my work. I no longer speak my
mother tongue, yet I need to do my part in carrying on the stories and cultural myths, legends
and spiritual legacy of our people. My hope is that my hands and spirit within will allow me this
one gesture." - Abraham Anghik Ruben

“The stories I learned as a child still guide my hands. They are alive, and I honour them each time I carve.”

Stone Sculptor Abraham Anghik Ruben

Abraham Anghik Ruben (b. 1951, Paulatuk, NWT) is one of Canada’s most celebrated Inuit sculptors. Working from Salt Spring Island, he blends ancient Inuvialuit stories with contemporary sculptural language, creating works in stone and bronze that explore cultural memory, survival, and the northern imagination. Exhibiting internationally since 1973, his work appears in major museum collections worldwide.

Artist Statement

“My work draws from the stories, teachings, and traditions I learned as a child in Paulatuk. I use both traditional and contemporary materials to retell these ancient narratives in new ways — exploring the spirit world, cultural memory, shamanism, and the shared history of northern peoples. Though I root myself in contemporary sculpture, my cultural identity remains at the core of everything I create.”
