"World beauty can’t be defined by is a matter of personality. There is a higher beauty which is universal and eternal but art has little to do with it. Art is confined to this world and subject to the limits of this world." ~ Artist Martin Honisch
I would venture to state that the fantastic is at the root of all art and ought to occupy a central position, reflecting the basic fact that life and the world are inherently fantastic, weird and wonderful.

Painter Martin Honisch

Martin Honisch (b. 1942) is a Chemainus-based painter celebrated for his luminous, dreamlike compositions that blend memory, surrealism, and the quietly fantastical. Trained at UBC and the University of Hamburg through a World University Service scholarship, he later taught art before devoting himself full-time to painting in 1982. Rejecting trends and “isms,” Honisch paints the worlds he loves—tropical gardens, European parks, ships at sea, imagined houses—rendered with warmth, wit, and an enduring belief that the fantastic lies at the root of all art.

Artist Statement

“I paint what I like. My paintings are pleasant dreams—sometimes nostalgic, often enigmatic. I have never found non-objective art compelling; the fantastic, the bizarre, and the wonderful are the true roots of art. Life itself is inherently strange, and my work reflects that quiet, enduring wonder.”
