The physical representation of Mel Williamson's artistic expression through paint appeals to our sense of touch, as the oil paint's tactile and slippery nature is embraced during the creation process. The background remains connected, releasing only glimpses of the forms, creating a sense of tension and movement.

Williamson's goal is to capture the emotions conveyed through the figures, expressed through their unconscious gestures. There is a voyeuristic chain of observation present: the unaware subject, the artist, and the viewer. These expressive works of artistic observation, elevate and validate brief and humble moments, allowing others to bear witness to the beauty of day to day existence.

“The truth is in the gesture. Everything else is decoration.”

Oil Painter Mel Williamson

Salt Spring Island painter Mel Williamson creates intimate, gesture-driven oil paintings where figures and forms seem to emerge from shifting light. Working without preliminary drawing, she uses large brushes and palette knives to carve out essential shapes, celebrating the tactile nature of oil paint. Formerly a graphic designer, she now paints full-time, focusing on honest, fleeting moments and the emotional truth within everyday gestures.

Artist Statement

“I want to capture the emotion held within a gesture—the truth expressed through unconscious movement. I paint without drawing first, letting subjects emerge naturally from the canvas. The tactile nature of oil paint becomes part of the story; forms appear like sculptures being released. I aim to elevate brief, humble moments into something witnessed, validated, and deeply human.”
