Carol Haigh

Acrylic Painter

(b. 1953) England

Salt Spring Island, BC
Active Years: 1980s–Present

A lifelong sailor and Salt Spring Island artist, Carol Haigh creates luminous acrylic paintings inspired by the shifting moods of the ocean and sky. Using layered washes and precise detail, her work captures the clarity, fragility, and atmosphere of the West Coast. Her paintings are held in private collections internationally.

I was born in England and have lived on Salt Spring Island since 1955.

Growing up in the Gulf Islands of Canada I naturally acquired an affiliation for the sea.  From an early age I was mucking about in boats and exploring the shorelines.  At the age of sixteen I sailed across the Pacific Ocean with my parents and three sisters to the South Sea Islands, New Zealand and Australia on a trimaran built by my father.   It is fair to say that this voyage was the inspiration for my future artistic endeavours.  From that time I have never lived far from the sea.

Over the years I have owned a succession of little boats and for the past thirty years or so have sailed my classic wooden boat "Korari" around the local waters.  My habit has been to sail in the summer months and work in the studio in the winters.

My paintings of oceans are generally large format.  The size of the canvas allows me to feel fully immersed in the experience of the sea while I am working.  The ocean enthrals me and painting it challenges me in a way that nothing else can.  It is enchanting and beautiful.  The nature of the sea is to be in perpetual motion and so to capture the moment I am seeking I use photography as a reference for my work.  The paintings have evolved over the years although my method has remained constant.

Initially, I painted on illustration board but since 2006 I have been working solely on canvas.  I work with thin washes of acrylic paint and gradually build up tone, intensity of colour and luminosity.  My paintings have been referred to as realism, hyper realism or photo realism.

My paintings can be found in private collections around the world.
