The Grateful Dead first preformed at the PNE Gardens on July 29, 1966. The Dead were in town for the Trips Festival, a three-day event that also included future San Francisco legends Big Brother and the Holding Company.
It was the Dead’s first appearance outside the U.S., and they were totally unknown — their debut album wouldn’t be released for another seven months. In fact, the Dead weren’t even advertised on the poster for the show.
The Dead stayed in Vancouver the week following the Trips festival and played one night at the Pender Auditorium.
