7" x 7.5" Framed

"When I take a break from painting, I often wander into the garden right outside of my studio. Flowers are more challenging for me to paint than humans! But I look for the tension and weight, strength and delicacy in the same ways as I do when studying human forms."

“The truth is in the gesture. Everything else is decoration.”

    Oil Painter Mel Williamson

Salt Spring Island painter Mel Williamson creates intimate, gesture-driven oil paintings where figures and forms seem to emerge from shifting light. Working without preliminary drawing, she uses large brushes and palette knives to carve out essential shapes, celebrating the tactile nature of oil paint. Formerly a graphic designer, she now paints full-time, focusing on honest, fleeting moments and the emotional truth within everyday gestures.

    Artist Statement

“I want to capture the emotion held within a gesture—the truth expressed through unconscious movement. I paint without drawing first, letting subjects emerge naturally from the canvas. The tactile nature of oil paint becomes part of the story; forms appear like sculptures being released. I aim to elevate brief, humble moments into something witnessed, validated, and deeply human.”
