Winter Kale
by Garry Kaye Acrylic Painter

Vast amounts of time spent on Salt Spring Island, as a child on a then less populated island, many days farming and simply the years spent living there – have shaped his development of a different sensibility regarding landscape and beauty.

His work twists the often overlooked mess of impenetrable underbrush to focus on the intricate yet subtle beauty the island has revealed to him. Garry’s paintings are not of typical beauty.

“My paintings aren’t of typical beauty. They come from the overlooked places—roadside thickets, hedgerows, and underbrush.”

Acrylic Painter Garry Kaye

Born and raised on Salt Spring Island, Garry Kaye is a Canadian painter known for his meticulously detailed acrylic landscapes. A graduate of the Vancouver School of Art in sculpture, he now focuses on dense, “unpretty” corners of the rural landscape—overgrown fencelines, tangled underbrush, forgotten edges. Using photo references and a grid-based process, he paints each work one small square at a time, revealing unexpected colour and quiet complexity.

Artist Statement

“I was born and raised on Salt Spring Island, and the landscape here has quietly imprinted itself on me. In my daily comings and goings, I’ve unconsciously absorbed details of sun and shadow, of hedges, ditches, and overgrown fencelines. These are not ‘postcard’ views. They’re places most people pass without a second glance, but for me they hold a subtle, intricate beauty that I try to honour in paint.”
