Martin Honisch

Martin Honisch (1942-2026) is a Chemainus-based painter celebrated for his luminous, dreamlike compositions that blend memory, surrealism, and the quietly fantastical. Trained at UBC and the University of Hamburg through a World University Service scholarship, he later taught art before devoting himself full-time to painting in 1982. Rejecting trends and “isms,” Honisch paints the worlds he loves—tropical gardens, European parks, ships at sea, imagined houses—rendered with warmth, wit, and an enduring belief that the fantastic lies at the root of all art.
