Oak Table
by John Bateman Multidisiplinary

Salt Spring artist John Bateman joined NSCAD woodshop director Ken Lamb as a shop technician and teaching assistant. Through Ken’s enthusiasm and knowledge, John’s passion for woodworking began.

Humour and craft are cousins—they both rely on timing, honesty, and a good sharp edge.

Multidisiplinary John Bateman

A graduate of NSCAD, Bateman has worked as a woodshop technician, furniture maker, recording studio owner, album-cover designer, and comedy writer. His creative versatility deeply informs his sculptural and functional wooden works. Alongside his artistic career, Bateman is a Champion for Anxiety Canada and serves on the board of the Bateman Foundation.

Artist Statement

“I’ve always moved between mediums—wood, sound, print, humour. The common thread is storytelling. Woodworking grounds me the most; it’s where craft and character meet. Every piece I make carries a bit of lived experience, a bit of mischief, and a lot of gratitude for the material itself.”
